When homeowners describe the pressure in the room, they describe walking away

We read 1,209 posts and comments from six home improvement forums. 164 of them describe high pressure during the in-home estimate, more than carry fear and more than carry anything except price. Here is what they wrote, in their own words, with the thread behind each one.

What we read

1,209 posts and comments from six home improvement forums, collected on 25 August 2026. Homeowners talking to each other about having a salesperson in the house. We asked nobody anything and we paraphrase nothing.

164 of the 1,209 describe high pressure in the room. That is more rows than carry fear, and more than carry any topic except price.

Where a homeowner goes on to describe that pressure, he describes walking away. Every time, in every row we read.

The discount that ends the sale

The sign-today discount exists to raise your same-visit close rate. Here is what it looks like from the other side of the table.

"if you sign today we can offer 15% discount right now."
"I told them that I don't do deals like that where I have to decide on the spot ... I will not be going ahead regardless."

r/HomeImprovement, 21 August 2026

Sit with the word "regardless". The discount did not fail to land. It ended the sale.

"The kind of guy that won't leave, says your name at the beginning of every sentence he speaks, smarmy, calls the manager, scrambles up the offer."

r/HomeImprovement, 24 August 2026

In these 1,209 rows, every sign-today discount comes from somebody who did not buy. That does not prove the tactic never works. It shows what the tactic leaves behind in public, where your next customer reads before he books an estimate.

The price that moves

Price is the biggest theme in the corpus at 478 of 1,209 rows. Read what it attaches to and it is almost never the number on its own. It is the number moving.

A salesman quoted one homeowner about $8,200, then about $5,400 to sign that moment. A few days later the inside sales team emailed $4,530.

"Life is too short for shady games, needless pressure and misleading sales tactics."

r/HomeImprovement, 24 August 2025

A price that travels that far tells the buyer somebody invented the first one. After that he believes no number you give him, including the honest one.

"he wouldn't provide me a copy of his estimate"

Refusing to leave a written price reads as proof the price is fake.

What won that job instead

The same homeowner bought. Just not from the company with the shrinking price.

"I'm gladly giving my business to a local contractor who came to my house, actually inspected the inside and outside of my windows."

Same price. The competitor inspected the house, left a number, and left.

That is the cheapest thing on this list to copy, and it costs you nothing but the instruction to your estimator.

What they actually want, and what the ads show

The trade advertises safety. Grab bars, low thresholds, walk-in tubs, product photography that looks like a hospital.

Here is the relief a buyer describes after the job.

"The best part is that it still looks like a normal, modern bathroom instead of a 'senior bathroom'"

r/HomeImprovement, 22 August 2026

The aging-in-place buyer does not want an accessible bathroom. He wants a normal bathroom that happens to be safe. Often he is not the buyer at all. He is the adult child watching a parent step over a tub wall.

A beautiful bathroom that happens to have a bench and a bar is a different ad from the one this trade runs.

The review that arrives four years later

An overclaim made in the living room does not stay in the living room.

"When I initially bought it, the salesman specifically said an elephant can stand on it."

Four years on, the shower pan cracked around the drain. By the buyer's account the company honoured the warranty and still charged about $3,000 in labour, on a job that cost about $9,000 new. It blamed a cleaner that was on its own approved list, and said it would take that cleaner off the list.

"I will seemingly have to pay $3000 every four years to maintain this shower"

r/HomeImprovement, 21 July 2026

We have not put any of that to the company, and for this purpose it does not matter which side is right.

r/HomeImprovement, 21 July 2026

That review is now the first thing a homeowner in that market reads. The same-visit close borrowed against your lead cost four years out, and the bill came.

What this is not

1,209 rows of people who chose to post are not a survey of your market. Happy customers write less than angry ones, and nobody in this corpus is your customer.

What it is good for is language. These are the words your buyer uses when you are not in the room, and you cannot get them from a dashboard.

Do this before the week is out

Read six of these quotes to your sales team on Monday. Out loud, without commentary.

Then ask your estimators one question: when did we last leave a written price and walk out without asking for a signature?

The answer will tell you more about your close rate than any report will.

Where each quote came from

Every quote above is verbatim. Here is the thread behind each one, in the order they appear. They open in a new tab so you keep your place.

We collected all 1,209 rows on 25 August 2026 and quoted them as written. If a thread has since been deleted by its author, the quote stands as we recorded it that day.

Questions owners ask

Where did these quotes come from?

Six home improvement forums, 1,209 posts and comments, collected on 25 August 2026. Every quote here is verbatim and every one links to the thread it came from, so you can read what came before and after it. We asked nobody anything and we posted nothing.

Are these bath customers or window customers?

Both, and that is the point. The in-home estimate is the same visit whether the product is a shower or a set of windows. A homeowner who walks out on a window salesman walks out on yours for the same reason.

My close rate depends on closing in the room. Are you telling me to stop?

No. We are telling you what the tactic costs in public, so you can price it. Not one sign-today discount in these 1,209 rows comes from a buyer. Those posts outlive the quarter they paid for.

Is this not just angry people on the internet?

Partly, yes, and that is why it is language and not a survey. The useful part is that angry people write down exactly what happened, in order, with the numbers. A satisfied customer writes four words.

What does any of this have to do with my ads?

The ad sets the expectation the visit has to meet. If the ad promises a free consultation and the visit turns into a two hour close, the homeowner writes that gap down afterwards. We count what the trade promises this week, so you can see your offer next to everyone else's.

How the money works

  • Priced on appointments, not clicks. A monthly fee against a number of confirmed appointments we agree from your calendar and your last ninety days. A month under that number costs nothing.
  • Your ad spend stays on your card, in your ad account. We never touch it, and we never own your account, your page or your number.
  • One company in your trade per metro. No annual contract, thirty days either way.
